Social Media VS Outsourcing Abroad

I recently had a need for a developer who was familiar with pubsub technology. I went to elanace and others to find the skills. To no avail, I could not find anyone. I then began to search google, blogs and forums and a few names came up.

After emailing a few, one developer got back with me within one day.  He asked the right questions on what I needed. I replied and within under a week, he started and finished the job. The price was low. The quality was high. He was right in the USA.

This makes me wonder if all the outsourcing I have done could have been replaced by good old fashion social media search?

I do need to point out, the developer was not even looking for work. I just sent him an email and he responded. Pretty easy. No fee to pay. No place to sign up. Just direct communication with the developer.

This is the real threat of Social Media. Open communications that does not need a middle man to broker the relationship.

To show just how easy this is, put this search into google: resume inurl:resume virginia Linux

I am asking Google to give me resumes of folks who live in Virginia. At the time of  this post, Google gave me , 41,000 results. Then I narrowed it down to Reston Virginia. Now I am at 11,700. The point here is who needs a talent site, of you can call the folks direct?

After I got the resumes I needed , I looked up a few names within some blog search tools and picked the most active one. ( The one who is on the blogs participating)

Search. Find. Hire. Done.

Outcome: Social Media Search 1 , Outsourcing 0

Social Media VS The Town Bully

Please note the following is a true story that I was personally involved in some days ago. I will not name the individuals involved, but I will depict how the town bully lost his battle by a few keystrokes within Facebook.

This scene started with two neighbors, one 17 and one 24 years old. (Age is important here) The 17 year old was walking down the street and noticed the 24 year old saying bad language to him. The 24 year old went as far as physically attacking him. No one really knows the reason what sparked the disagreement.

After the attack, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters gathered around to yell at each other. This yelling caused the police to come and take statements.  After everyone calmed down the police officers gave the family that had been attacked an option to press charges.

I visited the neighbors of the attacked family to see if they were ok. They were shook up and was ready to leave to go press charges. Before they left, an uncle asked the question of how to spell the attackers name. The teenager replied, I have no idea, let me check Facebook.

In 60 secs, the teenager not only had correct spellings, he also provided girlfriend information too.

The family went to press the charges against the attacker for assaulting a minor with the precise information they needed.

Outcome:  Town Bully 0  Facebook  1

Social Media Privacy Concerns

This topic keeps coming up all over the internet.  Social media privacy concerns are flooded with tips on how to make facebook page not seen or your Twitter tweets not visible.  We live in a world where social media privacy settings dominate our social behavior.

The thing that no one really talks about is how your personal social media privacy policy habits may hurt you. The fundamental root of all social media is the ability to share. If we all adopt to a no share policy, where will social media go?

Employers are now looking to see what you are all about in Facebook. If they find great content from your competition and none from you, how does this help your cause? I think there must be balance.

We as social citizens need to gauge what we want to be seen. We should not go for the “all” option and not make our thoughts open to the public. Open posting will help you if you control your editorial. One example of this is if you want to impress a future client, then write about what that client is in to. Do this on your blog. On facebook, lock it down if you need to. As far as twitter, use multiple accounts. One for professional and one for play. Lock the play account down. Open the professional one up.

Use your social media privacy settings to your advantage to ease your social media privacy concerns.
